Welsh quartet hold their own in England

Four junior members of the Welsh Petanque Association (WPA) travelled to Whittlesy, near Peterbrough on 18th and 19th November to take part in the annual “Weekend of Excellence” hosted by the English Petanque Association (EPA).

This year 27 junior players ranging in age from 9 to 16 years were invited by the EPA to take part in the two day intensive coaching course, the quartet from Wales included Sophie Enright (14), her cousin Mark Williams (12) and Jesse and Sam Lipetz-Robic (9 and 13, respectively)

The EPA Coaches, which included Simon Bird, who has represented Great Britain at the World Championships; took all four of the juniors through their paces and helped them improve their skills.  Watch out all the senior players, these juniors are a force to be reckoned with.

Both Sophie Enright and Mark Williams are not new to the sport, both played in the Home Nations competition, which was held at the Cardiff Yacht Club last August.  However, due to problems with Scottish travel arrangements they assisted Scotland, who were short of junior players and ended up play against their own Welsh team mates!  Next year they hope that will not be an issue as the Home Nations is to be hosted by Scotland, so thay can play for Wales.

Two brothers invited to train with the best in England

Two brothers Sam (13 yrs) and Jesse (9 yrs) Lipetz-Robic have been invited by the English Petanque Association to train with the top English junior players at the forthcoming “Weekend of Excellence” at the indoor pétanque centre at Whittlesey, near Peterborough on the 18th and 19th November.

It is a great privilege to be invited to the Weekend of Excellence as there are only two places offered to the Welsh Pétanque Association (WPA) each year, and Sam and Jesse have been selected by the WPA National Coach Richard Trego for showing great potential for the sport in the future.

Sam & Jesse who are members of the Penarth Pétanque Club, together with their farther Jean-Yves, play in competitions regularly throughout the year.  This year Sam played for Wales for the first time, against junior teams from England and Scotland in the Home Nations competition, which was held at the Cardiff Yacht Club in August.

It was the clash of the contest on the petanque piste at Penarth this
week. (Wednesday, 25/5/05)

Penarth petanque club's first team had been drawn at home against the
club's second team in the first round of the Welsh Petanque
Association's league cup.

And that threw up two intriguing husband and wife clashes: first
teamers Tony Smith and Ian Williams against their wives, Judith and
Lynda respectively.

As expected, the first team which included Derek Jones and Hugh
Harrison won – 4-0 – and now progress through to the next round while
the second team, including Jenny Tuttle and, making her debut in
competitive boules, Marcia Clode, find themselves in the plate
competition.

The win provided a much-needed boost for the first team who have
struggled in their opening league fixtures this season.
