Welsh quartet hold their own in England
Four junior members of the Welsh Petanque Association (WPA) travelled
to Whittlesy, near Peterbrough on 18th and 19th November to take
part in the annual “Weekend of Excellence” hosted
by the English Petanque Association (EPA).
This year 27 junior players ranging in age from 9 to 16 years
were invited by the EPA to take part in the two day intensive coaching
course, the quartet from Wales included Sophie Enright (14), her
cousin Mark Williams (12) and Jesse and Sam Lipetz-Robic (9 and
13, respectively)
The EPA Coaches, which included Simon Bird, who has represented
Great Britain at the World Championships; took all four of the
juniors through their paces and helped them improve their skills. Watch
out all the senior players, these juniors are a force to be reckoned
with.
Both Sophie Enright and Mark Williams are not new to the sport,
both played in the Home Nations competition, which was held at
the Cardiff Yacht Club last August. However, due to problems
with Scottish travel arrangements they assisted Scotland, who were
short of junior players and ended up play against their own Welsh
team mates! Next year they hope that will not be an issue
as the Home Nations is to be hosted by Scotland, so thay can play
for Wales.
